Kitchen Overhaul: Sugar Seems To Be Everywhere

If anyone of us even wants the slightest chance of getting healthy, the first thing you’ll need to do is clean out your kitchen of all the unhealthy foods. But where would you start? We all like to believe that our kitchens are full of healthy nutritious foods but most of us don’t even know that there are conspirators hiding in just about every ready-to-use, prepared product out there, and sugar is one of the biggest culprits. Sugar has so many different names that most people don’t even know they’re eating sugar.

Detox, Cleanse or Bust: Recap

Periodic cleansing is always a great idea…so why not now?? Twice a year is ideal so I like to do a little extra detox in the spring and fall. Always ease into it! Start off with a few small changes…drink more water, eat less sugar, add in some good hardy greens and fiber-rich foods, avoid alcohol, get moving, get outside, and don’t forget to breathe. Any small changes you make will have a great impact on how you feel and it could keep motivated to going!!

Not all food found in health food stores is healthy

The big question is “can we assume that everything in the health food store is healthy?” The short answer is no. Health food stores do sell foods that aren’t really healthy for us…they are desired by us but not healthy for us. We can’t blame them. It’s simply a supply and demand issue. We demand convenience foods and they find a way to supply them to us. Our challenge is to eat less of these types of foods…the ones we crave but don’t give back us what we need because they don’t have any, or at least very little, nutrient value or contain ingredients we should be avoiding. In other words processed, manufactured, and packaged foods.

Whole Food Diets…A Reflection of Our Past

I believe our ancestors had a better understanding of food, not just the tastes and aromas of food but the effects it had on our bodies and overall health. They spent more time around food, learning about all the aspects of food from their elders, something that was passed down from one generation to the next. I’m a product of that philosophy.

Cleanse, Detox or Bust: Fibre

‘Don’t we get enough fiber in our diet?’  One of the first questions I’m asked when the subject of fiber comes up.  Short answer:  Only if you’re eating whole foods do you get enough fiber on a daily basis.

Food Sensitivities, Food Intolerances & Food Allergies. What’s the difference?

Food allergies are immune system responses to the protein content in foods causing your immune system to go into defense mode which is a protective response by the body. Food intolerances or sensitivities are a digestion issue where you cannot digest or breakdown these foods. A food diary can be a very helpful tool in tracking your food intake so you can discover what may be the problem.
